ABOUT THE WORDS:

The late film director, Robert Altman, once said, "I'm not trying to show you how I think life should be, I'm trying to show you how I find it." That, in effect, sums up the kind of nonfiction writing I do. I report facts, up close, personal, and as I find them. Through a series of taped interviews that are then transcribed, reorganized and reshaped, I bring real people's lives to the written page. And what terrific, fascinating, interesting lives these folks lead.

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHS:

Photography is another way to get to know person, a place, and even an idea. I take hundreds and hundreds of photographs of the people and places in my books. I only need one shot, just one, that either expresses or complements the person's words.

WHAT'S HAPPENING:

Researching the kinds of books I write and photograph takes a long time. My new book is with its publisher, but it won't be out until next year. I'm also photographing two more books for very young children. I'll tell you more about them as they get closer to becoming books.

This website, like my books, keeps changing. Please visit often.
